Is cash still widely used?
Rarely. The UK has been rapidly transitioning to cashless payments. Contactless cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay are the dominant payment methods. Many businesses — particularly in London — no longer accept cash at all. However, rural areas, traditional pubs, and markets still use cash regularly.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs (cashpoints) are widely available. Most high street bank ATMs are free to use. LINK network ATMs are the standard.
- Most ATMs are free for UK bank cards; foreign cards may incur a fee from your home bank
- Avoid independent ATMs in corner shops — they often charge £1.50-£2.00 per withdrawal
- Good availability in cities; reasonable in rural towns
Card acceptance
Excellent. Contactless payments up to £100 are accepted virtually everywhere. Visa and Mastercard are universal. American Express has good but slightly less coverage.
