Is cash still widely used?
Yes, entirely. Algeria is almost entirely cash-based. Foreign cards very rarely work in Algerian ATMs or businesses. Visitors must bring EUR or USD to exchange at banks or official bureaux de change.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
Foreign cards are not reliably accepted at Algerian ATMs. BNA and CPA Bank ATMs occasionally accept foreign Visa cards, but this is inconsistent.
- Bring EUR cash as your primary resource — most reliable for exchange
- Exchange at banks rather than unofficial money changers
- The dinar is a controlled currency with official rates only
Card acceptance
Very limited. A small number of international hotels in Algiers accept foreign cards. Everywhere else is cash-only.
Tips for travelers
- Algeria requires a visa for most nationalities — apply well in advance
- Bring sufficient EUR or USD for your entire stay
- Algeria has extraordinary Sahara landscapes and Roman ruins
- The dinar cannot be exchanged outside Algeria — spend or exchange before leaving
