Is cash still widely used?
Cash is the only payment method in Afghanistan. The banking system has been severely disrupted since 2021, and foreign cards are completely non-functional. USD is widely used alongside afghani for larger transactions.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
Foreign cards do not work in Afghan ATMs. Do not plan to access money via card or ATM at any point during your visit.
- Bring all necessary USD cash before entering the country
- Exchange to afghani at money changers (sarafi) in Kabul as needed
- Hawala (informal money transfer) is the dominant financial system
Card acceptance
None. Foreign cards are not accepted anywhere in Afghanistan.
Tips for travelers
- Check current government travel advisories before any travel to Afghanistan — most Western governments advise against all travel
- Bring significantly more USD than anticipated
- USD is widely accepted for larger purchases and accommodation
- Keep cash in multiple secure locations on your person
