Is cash still widely used?
Yes. Uganda is predominantly cash-based. Local transport (boda-bodas), markets, local restaurants, guesthouses, and most businesses require shilling cash. Mobile money (MTN Mobile Money, Airtel Money) is popular among locals but not easily accessible to foreign visitors.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are available in Kampala. Stanbic Bank and Centenary Bank machines accept foreign cards.
- Fees are around 10,000 UGX per withdrawal for foreign cards
- Limited ATM availability outside Kampala
- Withdraw sufficient cash before heading to Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth Park, or Murchison Falls
Card acceptance
Low. Some hotels and restaurants in Kampala accept cards. Outside the capital, cash is essential.

- Gorilla trekking permits must be booked and paid in advance (USD)
- Carry shillings for all daily spending outside Kampala
- USD is also accepted for larger tourist transactions
- Tipping guides and porters is important and expected
