Is cash still widely used?
Cash is the only option. Turkmenistan has no functional infrastructure for foreign bank cards. The country operates a strict state-controlled economy with a dual exchange rate system. All visitor transactions must be conducted in cash.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
Foreign cards do not work in Turkmenistan’s ATMs. Do not plan to withdraw cash using your foreign bank card at any point during your visit.
- Bring all necessary USD or EUR cash before entering the country
- Exchange to manat at official exchange bureaus in Ashgabat
- The official exchange rate is set by the government
Card acceptance
None. Foreign cards are not accepted anywhere in Turkmenistan.
