Is cash still widely used?

Yes. Despite growth in mobile payment apps like PromptPay, cash remains the default for street food, markets, taxis, and small shops across the country.

Cards and digital wallets are increasingly accepted in cities like Bangkok and Chiang Mai, but rural areas and informal vendors still expect cash.

ATMs and withdrawing cash

ATMs are widely available, even in small towns. Most charge a flat foreign transaction fee of around 220 THB per withdrawal, on top of your bank’s own fees.

Card acceptance

Major hotels, malls, and chain restaurants accept Visa and Mastercard. Smaller guesthouses, markets, and transport often require cash, so carry enough for daily needs.
