Is cash still widely used?
Yes. Tanzania is predominantly cash-based. Safari parks, Zanzibar spice markets, local transport, and most businesses outside upscale Dar es Salaam hotels require cash. USD is widely accepted alongside shillings for larger tourist transactions.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are available in Dar es Salaam and Arusha. CRDB and NMB Bank machines accept foreign cards.
- Fees are around 5,000 TZS per withdrawal for foreign cards
- Limited ATM availability in national parks and Zanzibar’s smaller areas
- Withdraw sufficient cash before heading to Serengeti or Ngorongoro
