Is cash still widely used?
Yes — entirely. Tajikistan is one of Central Asia’s most cash-dependent countries. Card payments are virtually non-existent outside a handful of international hotels in Dushanbe. The Pamir Highway and all rural areas are strictly cash-only.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are available in Dushanbe and Khujand but are unreliable for foreign cards. Agroinvestbank sometimes accepts foreign Visa cards.

- Do not rely on ATMs — bring USD cash and exchange to somoni as needed
- Money changers in Dushanbe offer reasonable rates for USD
