Is cash still widely used?
Yes β entirely. Tajikistan is one of Central Asiaβs most cash-dependent countries. Card payments are virtually non-existent outside a handful of international hotels in Dushanbe. The Pamir Highway and all rural areas are strictly cash-only.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are available in Dushanbe and Khujand but are unreliable for foreign cards. Agroinvestbank sometimes accepts foreign Visa cards.
- Fees are around 10 TJS per withdrawal
- Do not rely on ATMs β bring USD cash and exchange to somoni as needed
- Money changers in Dushanbe offer reasonable rates for USD
Card acceptance
Essentially non-existent outside top international hotels in Dushanbe. Plan your entire trip on a cash basis.
Tips for travelers
- Bring sufficient USD for your entire trip β this is non-negotiable
- Exchange to somoni gradually as needed from licensed money changers
- The Pamir Highway requires significant cash reserves for fuel, food, and accommodation
- Somoni cannot be exchanged outside Tajikistan
