Is cash still widely used?
Yes. Serbia is predominantly cash-based. While Belgrade’s restaurant and bar scene has improved card acceptance, local markets, smaller restaurants, transport, and businesses outside the capital rely on dinar cash. Note: Serbia uses its own dinar, not euros.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are widely available in Belgrade and larger towns. Banca Intesa and UniCredit Bank machines are reliable for foreign cards.
- Fees are around 200 RSD per withdrawal for foreign cards
- Good availability in Belgrade; more limited in rural areas
- Always withdraw RSD — avoid dynamic currency conversion
Card acceptance
Moderate in Belgrade. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at tourist restaurants, hotels, and larger shops. Outside the capital, cash is predominantly required.
