Is cash still widely used?
Yes, widely. Senegal is predominantly cash-based. Local transport, markets, beach vendors, and most businesses outside Dakar’s upscale areas require CFA franc cash. Mobile money (Orange Money, Wave) is growing among locals but inaccessible to foreign visitors without local SIMs.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are available in Dakar and larger towns. Ecobank and CBAO machines accept foreign cards.
- Fees are around 3,500 XOF per withdrawal for foreign cards
- Good availability in Dakar; limited in rural Casamance and the north
- Withdraw cash in Dakar before traveling to Saint-Louis or Casamance
Card acceptance
Low. Some upscale hotels and restaurants in Dakar accept cards. Everywhere else requires CFA francs in cash.
