Is cash still widely used?
Less and less. Saudi Arabia has undergone a dramatic shift toward cashless payments, with Mada (local debit network), Apple Pay, and contactless cards now dominating. The government’s Vision 2030 initiative has accelerated this transition significantly.
Cash is still used by some older residents and in traditional souks, but the overall trend is strongly cashless.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are widely available across the country. Al Rajhi Bank and SNB (Saudi National Bank) ATMs accept foreign cards.
- Fees are around 10 SAR per withdrawal for foreign cards
- Excellent availability in cities and major religious sites (Mecca, Medina)
- Note: Non-Muslims cannot enter Mecca or Medina
Card acceptance
Excellent. Visa and Mastercard are accepted almost universally. Contactless payments are standard across most businesses.
Tips for travelers
- Cards are your primary tool — cash is rarely needed
- Keep some riyals for traditional markets and small vendors
- The riyal is pegged to the USD at a fixed rate
- Hajj and Umrah pilgrims should carry some cash for crowded market areas
