Is cash still widely used?
Moderately. Poland has embraced BLIK (mobile payment system) enthusiastically — it’s used by millions for everything from ATM withdrawals to online shopping. Cards are broadly accepted, but cash is still commonly used, especially among older residents and in markets.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs (bankomaty) are widely available. PKO Bank Polski and Santander machines are common. Euronet ATMs are widespread but charge higher fees.
- Fees are around 10 PLN per withdrawal at standard bank ATMs
- Avoid Euronet ATMs — fees and exchange rates are unfavorable
- BLIK allows cardless ATM withdrawals for those with Polish accounts
Card acceptance
Very good. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at most businesses in cities. Contactless is extremely popular — Poland has one of Europe’s highest contactless adoption rates.
Tips for travelers
- Poland is very affordable by Western European standards
- Avoid Euronet ATMs — use bank-branded machines instead
- Carry some złoty for markets, street food, and smaller towns
- Tipping 10% is customary and usually given in cash
