Is cash still widely used?
Yes. Peru is predominantly cash-based. Markets, local restaurants, transport, tourist sites, and most businesses outside Lima’s upscale areas require sol cash. Aguas Calientes (gateway to Machu Picchu) is especially cash-dependent.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are available in Lima and larger cities. BCP (Banco de Crédito del Perú) and Scotiabank machines are reliable for foreign cards.
- Fees are around 15 PEN per withdrawal for foreign cards
- Withdraw ample cash in Lima before heading to Cusco or rural areas
- Aguas Calientes has ATMs but they frequently run out of cash
Card acceptance
Low to moderate. Lima’s Miraflores and Barranco districts have good card acceptance at tourist restaurants and hotels. Cusco has moderate acceptance. Everywhere else, cash is essential.
