Is cash still widely used?
Yes. Cash is the dominant payment method across Pakistan. Even in Lahore and Karachi, street food, local transport, bazaars, and most shops operate on cash. Raast (instant payment system) and JazzCash are growing among locals but not accessible to foreign visitors.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are reasonably available in major cities. HBL and MCB Bank ATMs generally accept foreign cards.
- Fees are around 500 PKR per withdrawal
- Withdrawal limits can be low — around 25,000 PKR per transaction
- ATMs are scarce in smaller towns and rural areas
Card acceptance
Visa and Mastercard are accepted at upscale hotels, larger restaurants, and some shopping malls in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. Local transport and everyday shopping requires cash.
Tips for travelers
- Check current travel advisories before visiting
- Exchange USD or EUR at authorized exchange companies (not banks) for better rates
- Carry sufficient cash when traveling outside major cities
