Is cash still widely used?
Rarely. New Zealand has embraced contactless payments enthusiastically. Cards are accepted at virtually all businesses — including remote petrol stations, rural cafes, and national park visitor centres. Cash is genuinely rarely needed.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are available in cities and larger towns. ANZ, BNZ, and ASB machines accept foreign cards.
- Fees are typically $3-5 NZD per withdrawal for foreign cards
- Good availability in cities; reasonable in tourist areas
- Very remote areas of Fiordland may have limited access — withdraw in Te Anau
Card acceptance
Excellent. Visa and Mastercard are accepted universally. Contactless is standard. Eftpos (local debit) is the dominant system among locals.
Tips for travelers
- Cards work even at remote DOC (Department of Conservation) huts and campgrounds
- New Zealand is relatively expensive — especially for accommodation
- Tipping is not customary in New Zealand
