Is cash still widely used?
Cash is the only practical option. Nauru is the world’s smallest island nation and has essentially no card infrastructure for visitors. AUD is the official currency and is used for all transactions.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
Very limited ATM access. Bendigo Bank Nauru has one ATM on the island with inconsistent foreign card acceptance.
- Bring all necessary AUD cash before arriving
- Do not rely on ATM or card infrastructure
- There is no backup if you run out of cash
Card acceptance
Very low. A small number of larger businesses occasionally accept cards. Cash is required for virtually everything.
Tips for travelers
- Nauru is one of the world’s least-visited countries
- The island’s phosphate mining history has left much of it stripped
- Flights are very limited — plan well in advance
- Bring all necessary cash for the duration of your stay
