Cash usage in Myanmar

Myanmar is a cash-only destination. Due to ongoing political and banking instability, foreign cards and ATMs are extremely unreliable. Bring all the US dollars you need for your trip.

Is cash still widely used?

Cash is the only reliable payment method in Myanmar. Following the 2021 military coup and subsequent banking crisis, the financial system has been severely disrupted. ATMs frequently run out of cash or are out of service, and foreign card acceptance has become extremely limited even in Yangon.

ATMs and withdrawing cash

ATM availability for foreign cards has become very unreliable since 2021. KBZ Bank ATMs were previously the most reliable but access for foreign cards remains inconsistent.

Card acceptance

Essentially non-existent outside a small number of international hotels in Yangon and Mandalay. Do not plan to use cards as a payment method.
