Is cash still widely used?
Yes. Mozambique is predominantly cash-based. Local transport, markets, local restaurants, and guesthouses require metical cash. USD is also accepted in many tourist and coastal areas. Upscale Bazaruto and Quirimbas resort islands accept cards for pre-booked stays.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are available in Maputo and larger provincial capitals. BCI and Standard Bank machines accept foreign cards.
- Fees are around 200 MZN per withdrawal for foreign cards
- Limited availability outside Maputo and Beira
- Withdraw cash in Maputo before heading to coastal areas or the north
Card acceptance
Low. Maputo upscale hotels and restaurants accept cards. Island resorts accept cards for pre-booked packages. Everywhere else requires metical or USD cash.

- USD is widely accepted in tourist areas and beach resorts
- Carry sufficient metical for local transport and market spending
- Northern Mozambique (Pemba, Quirimbas) has very limited ATM access
- Tipping is appreciated — 10% in tourist restaurants and for guides
