Is cash still widely used?
Yes. The Federated States of Micronesia uses USD but has very limited financial infrastructure across its four states (Pohnpei, Chuuk, Yap, Kosrae). Card acceptance is very limited even in state capitals. Outer islands have no card or ATM infrastructure.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are available in Pohnpei (Palikir) and some state capitals. FSM Development Bank machines occasionally accept foreign cards.
- Bring sufficient USD cash for your entire stay
- Do not rely on ATM access outside state capitals
- Withdraw before inter-state travel
Card acceptance
Very low. A small number of larger businesses in Pohnpei and Chuuk accept cards. Everywhere else requires USD cash.
