Cash usage in Mauritius

Mauritius has excellent card infrastructure for the Indian Ocean region. Cards are accepted widely at tourist resorts and businesses, making it one of Africa's most cashless island destinations.

Is cash still widely used?

Moderately less so. Mauritius has excellent card infrastructure at tourist resorts, hotels, and larger businesses. Local markets, street food vendors, and smaller businesses still prefer rupee cash. Port Louis’s central market is predominantly cash-based.

ATMs are widely available throughout Mauritius. MCB (Mauritius Commercial Bank) and SBM machines accept foreign cards.
