Is cash still widely used?
Cash is the only option. Mali is entirely cash-based. CFA francs are essential for all transactions. The security situation in northern and central Mali remains very serious, restricting travel significantly.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
Very limited ATM infrastructure for foreign cards. Bring sufficient CFA francs or exchange EUR/USD upon arrival.
- Ecobank in Bamako sometimes accepts foreign cards
- Bring EUR or USD to exchange at official banks
- Do not rely on card or ATM infrastructure
Card acceptance
Very low. A small number of upscale hotels in Bamako may accept cards. Cash is required everywhere else.
