Is cash still widely used?
Yes, entirely. Malawi is one of Africa’s poorest countries and is almost entirely cash-based. Local transport, markets, guesthouses, and all businesses outside Lilongwe’s upscale areas require kwacha cash.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are available in Lilongwe and Blantyre. National Bank of Malawi and Standard Bank machines accept foreign cards.

- Limited availability outside the two main cities
- Withdraw all necessary cash before traveling to Lake Malawi or rural areas
Card acceptance
Very low. A small number of upscale lodges and hotels accept cards. Everywhere else requires kwacha cash.
