Is cash still widely used?
Yes. Kyrgyzstan’s economy is predominantly cash-based. Outside Bishkek, card payments are essentially non-existent. Mountain guesthouses, yurt camps, local markets, and transport all require som in cash.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are available in Bishkek and Osh. Mbank and Optima Bank ATMs accept foreign cards.
- Fees are around 150 KGS per withdrawal for foreign cards
- Withdraw ample cash in Bishkek before heading to mountain regions
- ATMs are rare or non-existent outside major cities
Card acceptance
Very limited. Some hotels and restaurants in Bishkek accept cards. Everywhere else is strictly cash-only.

- Carry enough som for your full itinerary in mountain areas
- USD can be exchanged at banks and exchange offices in Bishkek
- Keep small denominations for shared taxis and local markets
- Kyrgyzstan is very affordable — cash goes a long way
