Is cash still widely used?
Not much. Israel is highly cashless — cards and digital payments are accepted at virtually all restaurants, hotels, supermarkets, and shops. Bit (local payment app) is popular among locals.
Cash is still useful at outdoor markets (like Mahane Yehuda in Jerusalem), Arab market areas, and for small tips.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are widely available in cities and tourist areas. Bank Hapoalim, Bank Leumi, and Discount Bank ATMs all accept foreign cards.
- Fees are around 8 ILS per withdrawal for foreign cards
- ATMs are available 24/7 in most urban areas
- Some ATMs also dispense USD
Card acceptance
Excellent. Visa and Mastercard are accepted virtually everywhere. American Express also has good coverage.
Tips for travelers
- Carry some shekels for traditional markets and Arab quarter vendors
- Tipping 10-15% at restaurants is customary and usually done in cash
- USD is sometimes accepted but at worse rates than shekels
