Is cash still widely used?
Cash is the only option for foreign visitors. International banking sanctions mean that Visa, Mastercard, and all foreign bank cards are completely non-functional in Iran. Locals use the Shetab domestic card network, which is not accessible to foreigners.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
Foreign cards do not work in Iranian ATMs under any circumstances. Plan your entire visit on a cash-only basis.
- Bring sufficient EUR or USD for your entire trip
- Exchange at official exchange offices (sarafi) in Tehran or other cities
- Note: prices are quoted in tomans (1 toman = 10 rials) — clarify which unit is being used
Card acceptance
None for foreign visitors. Domestic Iranian cards work within the country but are not accessible to foreign travelers.
Tips for travelers
- EUR is generally preferred for exchange; USD is also accepted but sometimes harder to exchange
- Check current visa requirements and travel advisories before planning travel
- Iran uses a dual currency naming system — toman and rial — which can confuse visitors
- Bring more cash than you estimate needing, as there is no backup option
