Is cash still widely used?
Yes, moderately. Budapest has solid card infrastructure at tourist-facing businesses. However, local markets, smaller restaurants, taxis, and businesses outside the capital still rely heavily on forints in cash. Note that Hungary uses forints, not euros.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are widely available in Budapest and larger towns. OTP Bank and K&H Bank machines are the most reliable for foreign cards.
- Fees are around 1,500 HUF per withdrawal for foreign cards
- Always withdraw HUF β avoid dynamic currency conversion to euros
- Euronet ATMs are common but have poor rates β use bank ATMs
Card acceptance
Good in Budapest. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at hotels, tourist restaurants, and larger shops. Outside Budapest, cash is more commonly required.
