Is cash still widely used?
Less so than before. The Octopus card (a rechargeable smart card) is accepted almost everywhere — MTR, buses, taxis, convenience stores, supermarkets, and many restaurants. Cards and contactless payments have also grown significantly.
Cash is still used and accepted everywhere, particularly at wet markets, dai pai dongs (open-air food stalls), and traditional shops in older neighbourhoods.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are ubiquitous — in MTR stations, shopping malls, banks, and on most streets. HSBC, Hang Seng, and Bank of China ATMs all accept foreign cards.

Card acceptance
Excellent. Visa, Mastercard, and Amex are accepted at virtually all hotels, restaurants, and shops. Contactless payments are widely supported.

- Get an Octopus card at any MTR station — it makes transport and small purchases effortless
- Wet markets and traditional street food are still cash-preferred
- Hong Kong is one of the safest places in Asia for card use
- The HKD is pegged to the USD, so exchange rates are very stable
