Is cash still widely used?
Cash is the only option. Haiti’s ongoing political and security instability has severely limited financial infrastructure. USD is widely used alongside gourdes for most transactions. Card infrastructure is essentially non-functional for most visitors.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATM access is very unreliable. Bring USD cash as your primary resource.
- Bring all necessary USD before entering Haiti
- Exchange to gourdes at licensed money changers as needed
- Do not rely on any electronic payment infrastructure
Card acceptance
Very limited. A small number of upscale establishments in Port-au-Prince may accept cards. Cash is required for virtually all transactions.
