Is cash still widely used?
Yes. Greece has a significant cash culture, partly due to tax evasion history and the legacy of the financial crisis. Local tavernas, family-run guesthouses, island ferries, taxis, and markets predominantly use cash. Tourist hotspots have better card acceptance.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are available in cities and most tourist areas. Eurobank and Alpha Bank machines are common. On smaller islands, there may be only one ATM — and it can run out of cash in peak season.
- Fees for foreign non-EU cards are typically around 3 EUR per withdrawal
- Withdraw cash on the mainland or larger islands before heading to smaller ones
- ATMs in very small islands can be unreliable in summer
Card acceptance
Moderate. Hotels, larger restaurants, and tourist shops in Athens and major destinations accept cards. Smaller tavernas, island shops, and local transport often require cash.
Tips for travelers
- Always carry at least €30-50 in cash on Greek islands
- Ferry tickets between islands can sometimes only be bought in cash
- Tipping 5-10% is appreciated and usually given in cash directly to staff
- Smaller islands may have limited ATM access — plan ahead
