Is cash still widely used?
Yes, almost entirely. Ethiopia is one of Africa’s most cash-dependent countries. Local transport, markets, restaurants, guesthouses, and most businesses across the country require birr cash. Even in Addis Ababa, card acceptance is very limited.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are available in Addis Ababa. Commercial Bank of Ethiopia machines sometimes accept foreign Visa cards, but reliability is inconsistent.
- Fees are around 50 ETB per withdrawal where foreign cards are accepted
- Withdraw sufficient cash in Addis before traveling to Lalibela, Gondar, or the south
- ATMs frequently run out of cash or are out of service
Card acceptance
Very low. A small number of international hotels in Addis Ababa accept cards. Everywhere else requires birr cash.

- Bring USD cash to exchange to birr — better rates than relying on ATMs
