Is cash still widely used?
Barely. Estonia pioneered e-government and digital society, and payments reflect this. Cards are accepted at virtually every business — including market stalls, small cafes, and rural shops. Many Estonians carry no cash at all.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are available in Tallinn and larger towns but becoming less necessary. Swedbank and SEB machines are the most common.
- Fees for foreign non-EU cards are around 3 EUR per withdrawal
- Good availability in Tallinn; reasonable in smaller towns
- Võru, Viljandi, and other smaller cities have ATMs in their centres
Card acceptance
Excellent. Visa and Mastercard are universally accepted. Contactless is standard. Estonia consistently ranks among Europe’s most cashless countries.
Tips for travelers
- Cards work virtually everywhere — cash is almost never needed
- Even Tallinn’s Old Town Christmas Market accepts cards at most stalls
- Estonia is more affordable than Western Europe but prices are rising
- Tipping is not mandatory but rounding up or leaving 10% is appreciated
