Cash usage in DR Congo

DR Congo is almost entirely cash-based. USD is the dominant practical currency across Africa's second-largest country, with virtually no card infrastructure for foreign visitors.

Is cash still widely used?

Cash is essentially the only option. DR Congo has minimal card infrastructure. USD is widely used for larger transactions and tourist services. Congolese francs are needed for smaller local purchases and transport.

ATMs and withdrawing cash

Very limited and unreliable ATM access for foreign cards. Bring USD cash as your primary resource.

Card acceptance

Very limited. A small number of upscale hotels in Kinshasa accept cards. Everywhere else is cash-only.
