Is cash still widely used?
Yes, outside resorts. All-inclusive resort zones (Punta Cana, Puerto Plata) are largely card-based. But in Santo Domingo’s colonial zone, local colmados, guaguas (buses), and everyday Dominican life, peso cash is essential.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are widely available in cities and resort areas. Banco Popular and BHD León machines accept foreign cards.
- Fees are around 200 DOP per withdrawal for foreign cards
- Excellent availability in resort areas and Santo Domingo
- USD is also widely accepted in tourist areas
Card acceptance
Good at resorts and tourist businesses. Local transport, markets, and smaller restaurants require pesos.
