Is cash still widely used?
Yes. Djibouti is predominantly cash-based. Local markets, transport, restaurants, and most businesses require franc cash. USD is also accepted at some tourist and military-oriented businesses given Djibouti’s role as a major military base hub.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are available in Djibouti City. Banque de Djibouti and BCI machines accept some foreign cards.

- Very limited ATM availability outside Djibouti City
- Withdraw cash before visiting Lake Assal or northern areas

Low. Some international hotels in Djibouti City accept cards. Everywhere else requires cash.
