Is cash still widely used?
Very rarely. Denmark has embraced cashless payments enthusiastically. MobilePay (local payment app) is used by nearly the entire population. Many businesses, including some restaurants and shops, no longer accept cash by law’s allowance — businesses can decline cash for amounts under a threshold.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are available in cities and larger towns. Danske Bank and Nordea machines are common.

Card acceptance
Excellent. Visa and Mastercard are universally accepted. Contactless is standard. Denmark consistently ranks among Europe’s top cashless countries.
Tips for travelers
- Cards are sufficient for virtually every situation
- Some outdoor markets accept MobilePay but not always foreign cards — carry a small amount of DKK just in case
- Denmark is one of Europe’s most expensive countries
- Tipping is not expected but appreciated — rounding up is common
