Is cash still widely used?
Yes, alongside cards. Prague has excellent card acceptance at tourist-facing businesses, but koruna cash is still widely used across the country. Local pubs (hospody), markets, and smaller towns lean toward cash. Note that the Czech Republic uses koruna, not euros — always pay in CZK.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are widely available in Prague and cities. Česká spořitelna and Komerční banka machines are the most common. Euronet ATMs are widespread but charge higher fees.
- Fees are around 50 CZK per withdrawal at standard bank ATMs
- Always withdraw CZK — never accept dynamic currency conversion in euros
- Euronet ATMs in tourist areas have very poor exchange rates — avoid them
Card acceptance
Good in Prague and larger cities. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and shops. Outside Prague, card acceptance varies more.
Tips for travelers
- Never exchange money at tourist exchange kiosks near Old Town Square — rates are extremely poor
- Use bank ATMs in non-tourist areas for the best rates
- Carry CZK for local pubs, markets, and public transport
- Tipping 10% is customary in restaurants
