Is cash still widely used?
Cash is the only option. Cuba operates a cash economy with very limited card infrastructure. US cards do not work at all. Some European bank cards work in certain ATMs, but reliability is inconsistent. All visitors should bring sufficient cash for their entire trip.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs exist in Havana and larger cities but are unreliable for foreign cards. Some European Visa cards work at Banco Metropolitano ATMs, but this varies.
- US cards do not work under any circumstances due to the US embargo
- Bring EUR, CAD, or GBP in cash — these exchange best
- Exchange at CADECA exchange offices for the best official rates
Card acceptance
Very limited. A small number of upscale Havana hotels accept non-US Visa and Mastercard. Everywhere else is cash-only.
Tips for travelers
- Bring significantly more cash than you think you need — ATM access is unreliable
- EUR and CAD are the most practical currencies to bring
- USD can be exchanged but was historically subject to a surcharge — check current rules
- Tipping is important for service workers — always tip in cash
