Is cash still widely used?
Yes — Cambodia is almost entirely cash-based. Uniquely, the US dollar is the dominant currency for most transactions above a few dollars, while riel is used for small change. Most ATMs dispense USD rather than riel.
Cards are accepted at a small number of tourist hotels and restaurants in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, but cash is expected nearly everywhere else.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are available in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville. Most dispense USD. ABA Bank and Canadia Bank ATMs are the most reliable for foreign cards.
- Fees are typically around $5 USD per withdrawal — relatively high
- Withdraw in cities; ATMs are scarce in rural areas and along the coast
- Some ATMs have low withdrawal limits of $200-$300 per transaction
Card acceptance
Very limited. Major tourist hotels, tour operators, and a small number of upscale restaurants in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap accept Visa and Mastercard. Everywhere else is cash-only.
Tips for travelers
- Always receive change in riel when paying in USD — riel coins don’t exist
- Keep $1 bills for tuk-tuks, street food, and tips
- Exchange riel back to USD or another currency before leaving — riel is not convertible abroad
- Entry fees to Angkor Wat and major attractions must be paid in USD
