Is cash still widely used?
Yes, widely. Bulgaria is one of the EU’s more cash-dependent countries. Outside Sofia, lev cash is essential for restaurants, guesthouses, transport, and markets. Even in Sofia, many smaller businesses prefer cash. Note: Bulgaria uses lev, not euros.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are available in cities and larger towns. UniCredit Bulbank and DSK Bank machines are reliable for foreign cards.
- Fees are around 5 BGN per withdrawal for foreign cards
- ATMs are available in tourist areas but can be scarce in rural Bulgaria
- Always withdraw BGN — avoid dynamic currency conversion
Card acceptance
Moderate in Sofia. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at hotels and larger restaurants in the capital. Outside Sofia, cash is the dominant payment method.
