Is cash still widely used?
Yes. Bhutan’s economy is predominantly cash-based. Most international tourists visit on a government-mandated all-inclusive package (which covers accommodation, meals, and a guide), so daily cash needs are relatively low. However, for souvenirs, local markets, tips, and personal expenses, ngultrum cash is essential.
Indian rupees are also accepted across Bhutan at par with the ngultrum.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are available in Thimphu and Paro. Bank of Bhutan and Bhutan National Bank ATMs accept some foreign cards.
- Fees are around 100 BTN per withdrawal
- ATM availability is very limited outside the two main towns
- Indian rupees (INR) can be used interchangeably with ngultrum
Card acceptance
Very limited. A small number of hotels and shops in Thimphu accept Visa and Mastercard. Most transactions require cash.

- Your tour package covers most expenses — carry cash mainly for tips and souvenirs
- Indian rupees are a convenient backup currency accepted everywhere
- Ngultrum cannot be exchanged outside Bhutan or India
- Withdraw cash in Thimphu or Paro before traveling to other districts
