Is cash still widely used?
Yes. Following international sanctions after 2020, Visa and Mastercard suspended operations in Belarus. Foreign cards from Western countries no longer work. Visitors must bring all necessary cash (preferably USD or EUR) and exchange to Belarusian rubles upon arrival.
ATMs and withdrawing cash
ATMs are available in Minsk for local cards, but foreign Western bank cards do not function. Russian cards (Mir) still work in some ATMs.
- Bring sufficient USD or EUR cash for your entire stay
- Exchange at official bank exchange offices for the best rates
- Do not rely on any Western card infrastructure
Card acceptance
Not functional for Western visitors. Local Belarusian cards work, but foreign Visa/Mastercard cards from Western countries are not accepted.
Tips for travelers
- Check current travel advisories before visiting — most Western governments advise against travel

- Exchange gradually at official exchange offices
- Belarus requires a visa for most Western passport holders — check requirements
